For a list of Resolved Problems and Known Problems with this firmwareversion, you can obtain the Firmware Release Notes in English by clicking thefollowing URL: _ip_comm/cuipph/7960g_7940g/firmware/8_1_2/english/release/notes/796040_812.html
Cisco provides image authentication with its various IP phoneprotocols. Image authentication allows the phone to detect if the imagehas been tampered with before it is programmed into the phone. If theimage fails the authentication process then the phone will reject theimage. Image authentication occurs through signed files. All Cisco7940 and 7960 IP Phone loads 5.0 and newer are signed and can only be upgradedor downgraded to other signed releases.

Note: For the Cisco Unified IP Phone models 7940 and 7960, you shouldnot add the extension of .sbn or .bin to the firmware version name inthe Cisco Unified Communication Manager database.
If you are using the Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7914 , you mustupgrade the Expansion Module to firmware release S00105000400 before youinstall the 8.1(2) Cisco Unified IP Phone 7960/7940 phone load. Theinstallation program is named cmterm-7914-sccp.5-0-4.exe (or cmterm-7914-sccp.5-0-4.cop.sgnfor Cisco Unified Communication Manager Release 5.0 and later), and isavailable on CCO in the same location as the installer for the 8.1(2) software.
I'm back again hoping you Spiceheads can help me out. My boss purchased some Cisco 7960G IP phones used. They were supposed to be set up for SIP which is the protocol we use here. However when they arrived they are SCCP. I am now tasked with changing the firmware to SIP so that we can use them. I'm running into a little trouble though. So I'll take you through what I've tried and hopefully find an answer.
While I have no practical experience with cisco phones, I found this link a while ago when discussing connecting cisco phones to an asterisk PBX. It also covers firmware update. It does sound like you are pretty close.
Install the firmware required by the Cisco IP phones in the flash memory of the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express systems. There are two commands required to provide access to these firmware files:
All the necessary firmware files for Cisco IP phones are stored internally in the flash memory of the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express router, so an external database or file server is not required. During registration, Cisco IP phones use TFTP to download firmware files from the router's flash memory. All Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express configuration and language files are located in the memory of the router in the system:/its/ directory.
To make the firmware file(s) available through a TFTP server, use the tftp-server flash:firmware-file-name(s) command on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express router. The load phone-type firmware-file command under telephony service is also required to associate the model of IP phone with the appropriate firmware file(s).
The XML file SEPAAAABBBBCCCC.cnf.xml (where AAAABBBBCCCC is the MAC address of the IP phone) contains the call agent IP address and port, firmware, locale, directory URL, and many other pieces of information. This file is present when the IP phone has been added to the configuration.
Listing 7.8 shows a configuration file that contains the phone model (7931), IP address (10.6.150.1), and port (2000) for registering; the firmware filename; the language (English United States); and additional information for proper IP phone operation.
IP phones and devices that do not find the more specific SEPAAAABBBBCCCC.cnf.xml file can use the XMLDefault.cnf.xml file if they have never registered before and an autoregistration method has been enabled. IP phones that download this XML file through TFTP learn the IP address and port to send Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP) messages to when attempting to register. The IP phones also learn the version of firmware that is required to function properly with the Cisco Unified Communications call control product to which the phone is registering. Cisco IP phone models 7931 and 7961 are highlighted.
Thanks @plemans I did download the Insight App yesterday and it only has a 30 day subscription (possibly because I purchased the Orbi last November). I don't find the Insight App as useful like the old Netgear/knighthawk app for non-business use. However, it is somewhat useful as I now receive an email notification showing the exact time of internet loss. For example, I lost internet again at 6:05 this morning so that tends to rule out the firmware version.I had spectrum check out the line and they couldn't see any issues so I'm going to try either a new modem or a factory reboot to see. 2ff7e9595c
